Rutherfordton is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,131 at the 2000 census. There were 1,602 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.91. It is the county seat of Rutherford County. Some locals refer to the town as "Ruffton", but others use the full name. Among the many enlightening attractions in Rutherfordton, the Museum of Rutherford Hospital is one that ranks among the most historical.
