Exeter is a city in Tulare County, California, United States. The population was 9,168 at the 2000 census. Exeter is located at 36°17'39?N, 119°8'34?W (36.294213, -119.142746). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²), all land. The name Exeter derives from the town of Exeter in Devon, England. Numerous other places have also been given the name Exeter. As of the census of 2000, there were 9,168 people, 3,001 households, and 2,325 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,587.3/km² (4,110.9/mi²). There were 3,168 housing units at an average density of 548.5/km² (1,420.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 69.73% White, 0.69% African American, 1.47% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 23.20% from other races, and 3.57% from two or more races.
