As of the census of 2000, there were 6,098 people, 2,348 households, and 1,751 families residing in the city. The population density was 81.5/km² (211.0/mi²). There were 2,501 housing units at an average density of 33.4/km² (86.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 67.56% White, 29.08% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 1.13% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.61% of the population. There were 2,348 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 19.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
