As of the census of 2000, there were 8,317 people, 4,401 households, and 2,583 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,126.7/km² (2,922.0/mi²). There were 4,925 housing units at an average density of 667.2/km² (1,730.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.90% White, 1.71% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.97% of the population. There were 4,401 households out of which 10.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.3% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 28.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
