As of the census of 2000, there were 10,423 people, 4,825 households, and 2,764 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,507.2/km² (3,904.4/mi²). There were 4,991 housing units at an average density of 721.7/km² (1,869.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.67% White, 2.73% African American, 0.18% Native American, 10.08% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.20% of the population. There were 4,825 households out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 38.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
