Salem is a city in Dent County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,854 at the 2000 census. There were 2,115 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 36.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.86. It is the county seat of Dent County. Salem sits very close to the Ozark Scenic Riverways and is close to Montauk, which is where the Current River begins. Salem High School is the only high school located in Salem. Salem is also home to an extension of Southwest Baptist University. Salem has a humid subtropical climate. It receives cold winters and warm summers with consistent rainfall year-round. -- Source: Wikipedia.com
