There were 4,086 housing units at an average density of 701.2/km² (1,813.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.94% White, 1.19% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.77% of the population. There were 2,296 households out of which 18.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.4% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
