As of the census of 2000, there were 29,592 people, 10,273 households, and 8,023 families residing in the city. The population density was 820.2/km² (2,124.9/mi²). There were 11,120 housing units at an average density of 308.2/km² (798.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.36% White, 20.43% African American, 0.87% Native American, 2.70% Asian, 0.58% Pacific Islander, 4.98% from other races, and 5.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.69% of the population. There were 10,273 households out of which 47.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
